ABOUT

The composer and sound artist Sibin Vassilev grew up in Sofia and Berlin. Currently he lives and works in Berlin.
Sibin Vassilev’s musical career began in the early nineties when he co-founded and played bass for the Bulgarian rock band Rag Dolls. During his university studies in Berlin he turned his focus towards electro acoustic music and began to create installations that explored interactions between space, architecture and sound. His sound installations appeared in the pavilions of Côte d’Ivoire and Benin at EXPO2000, Hannover. In 2006 he created, in collaboration with the artist Ivan Moudov, the audio installation Guide (Sofia Art Gallery and the ACC Galerie Weimar, amongst others). He took part in the 2008 Young Artists Biennale Bucharest. In 2009 he built the 16-channel sound installation Tonschleuse for the Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin. His Sound-Light-Installation EDISON (collaboration with Fabian Bleisch) was presented at the Digital Arts Festival 2013 in Sofia. His ongoing audiovisual installation BIG DATA (in collaboration with Yoann Trellu) has been shown in public space in Berlin (2016), Sofia and Plovdiv (both 2018). In 2021 René Block invited Sibin Vassilev to produce the sound installation "Untitled (after Modeller Opus 33 by Henning Christiansen)" at the Centre for Klangkunst at Kunsthal44, Moen, Denmark.

Since 2003 he has also composed and produced music and sound design for films as well as numerous theater, dance and multi-media performances presented e.g. at Theater am Halleschen Ufer, Berlin (2003), Magazin der Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin (2007), GRIPS Theater, Berlin (2007), Bonn Biennale (2005), Museum for Communication, Berlin (2005), National Theater, Singapore (2006); Japan Society, New York (2009), Tokyo (2012), International Theatre Festival Varna (2017) and Digital Arts Festival, Sofia (2017), Orangerie, Cologne (2017/2018), Zeiss Planetarium, Bochum (2020), Societaetstheater, Dresden (2022)
The films and theater productions, for which he has composed the music, have received numerous prices: “Dance theatre price of the City of Colone” (Andropolaroid, 2010, by theater 51°), “Stuttgart Theater Award” (Jobs in Heaven, 2015, and House of Hope, 2016, by post theater), nomination “Kurt-Hackenberg-Preis” (The Influencer, 2018, by wehr51). Special Jury Award of the “CineLibri International Book and Movie Festival” (His Cannibal Granny, 2019, directed by Dessislava Nikolova).
